Beech in the Cotswolds

Oil and acrylic on canvas.
50"x70"

I went to the Cotwolds with the intention of photographing or painting. It took a while to grasp the countryside- all so very green. Then I realized that the trees, old and huge- were black, monolithic against the bright summer yellow green light that framed them in intricate, almost geometric patterns. Layers of shapes and movement were formed. Like a dance. This is what I discovered, first in the forest, and more as the painting developed, and what I tried to capture.
