Monhegan Bell

This is a pastel painting of the Monhegan Bell.

Monhegan Island is off the coast of Maine. It has been an attraction for American artists for well over a century. Rockwell Kent had a home on the island. Edward Hopper frequented the island.

The bell sits on a high location above and overlooks the harbor between Mannana Island and Monhegan. I was attracted to the early morning light that faintly illuminated the scene. I am also fascinated by the almost imperceptible distinction between the sky and the sea (and what that suggests).
